The pro rata rule, figured for you

Converting to a Roth is only tax-free if you have no other pretax IRA money. Pfifi does the Form 8606 math and tells you how to fix it before the year ends.

Roth conversion · Form 8606Example
Nondeductible contributions (your basis)$7,500
Other pretax IRA money on Dec 31$42,500
Converted to Roth$7,500
Taxable part of the conversion$6,375
Roll the $42,500 into your 401(k) before Dec 31 and the whole conversion becomes tax-free.

Backdoor and mega-backdoor reminders

When your income is over the Roth limit, or your plan allows after-tax contributions, you get a reminder with the amount and the steps.

  • Backdoor RothJan 6

Your income is over the Roth IRA limit. Contribute $7,500 to a traditional IRA, then convert it.

  • Mega-backdoor RothMar 2

Your plan allows after-tax contributions and in-plan conversions: up to $40,150 more this year.

  • Convert soonMar 9

Growth on after-tax money is taxed when you convert, so the sooner the better.

Also included

  • Every eligible plan. 401(k), 403(b), 457(b), SEP and SIMPLE IRAs, HSAs, traditional and Roth IRAs.
  • Limits and catch-ups. Age 50+ and the larger age 60–63 catch-up, with excess contributions flagged.
  • Employer match. Counted toward the total limit, so the mega-backdoor room is right.
  • Form 8606 ready. Basis carried from year to year, so a conversion is never taxed twice.
